Could Abraham and Isaac have even imagined what this event at this location anticipated? We cannot know what they thought. But Jesus said that Abraham saw his day, and rejoiced to see it (John 8:56). This “day” may have been a reference to the coming of the Messiah to make the perfect sacrifice. It may be that at that moment at Moriah God allowed Abraham to see more of the divine plan than the text has put into words.
